Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
