The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
