A recent study indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
