The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
