An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

Several of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
